This design afforded the opportunity to create a more engaging and ceremonial entry experience. The site character was maintained with a winding drive, preserving many mature oaks and rolling hills with Chilton stone walls. A sequential unveiling of views leads to the residence. Along this approach, we wished to connect the two different wetland areas on the site. To make this both artful and ecologically responsive, an independent water feature was developed that visually ties the site's hydrological features together. Taking advantage of the sloping topography, a series of stone weirs gently cascade water down the slope, starting near the edge of the upper wetland and leading down to the lower. A bridge over this feature is the main arrival element, which reveals the façade of the new house. The topographic character of the site is highlighted with a new pool house and zero-edge pool on a plinth that rises out of grade. The pool has a waterfall that faces back toward the home, creating a visual and audible experience from inside the homes living spaces.
