Successful contemporary rural development requires strong local leadership, and places for collaboration and cooperation - in short, a learning community - a Rural Learning Center (RLC). The site is to be a place of gathering. That notion informed the siting of the three RLC structures in an intimate circle to enclose the Center's central gathering space. Natural elements - windrows, prairies grasses, and water - are gently threaded through structural volumes. An iconic circle of modern windmills mark the site - visible for miles in each direction - they produce electricity with the same wind that their ancestors used to pump water. The RLC is a model that can be replicated and adapted to rural communities across the Midwest and the United States.
